Tracking Analytics in Your Business
If you’re a business owner or entrepreneur, especially in the online space, you’ve probably heard about tracking analytics. In this blog post, I’ll share with you what tracking analytics is, why it’s important (and why it’s not!), and what to track and be aware of. Not everyone loves this process - and that’s okay! My hope is that you’ll see the benefit of tracking your analytics and see how it can be beneficial for you within your business.
What is it?
Tracking analytics is a masculine energy strategy that allows for you to track the data within your business. This can be done for Instagram, Facebook and other social media platforms, your website, YouTube, etc. In this process, you’re tracking specific numbers for specific areas for a specific amount of time. This can be done via a spreadsheet or through different apps or programs that can break down the data for you more specifically. If you’re just starting out and DIYing this process, good ol’ google sheets or microsoft excel is just fine!
Why it’s important (and why it’s not!)
This process of tracking analytics, while potentially tedious and time-consuming, can actually tell you a lot about your business systems and strategies. For example, with tracking your Instagram analytics, you can see which type of content (reel, story, live video, post) may reach the most people, as well as how many followers you’re gaining, website taps, interactions, and more! The content you create may be 🔥🔥🔥, but are you speaking to the people you’d like to be? Are you sustainably growing your account? Do you have folks interacting with this content that you’ve put so much of yourself into?
It’s important because you’re able to see patterns in what works + what doesn’t for your content as well as providing you with numbers and data to see it physically. You can think, “no one is interacting with me,” but with tracking analytics, you’re able to potentially see WHY this may be based upon what data you’ve been collecting.
now to why it’s not important…
Often when we’re tracking the data that comes through, we can get SO stuck on the numbers that we stop creating content from a space of inspiration. We begin to look at “what works,” and then miss the point of sharing content that lights us up and connects us with our ideal followers in the first place! (more on how to work through this at the end 😉)
We can also get discouraged when we don’t see the numbers we want or the growth we want to see because we might be shadowbanned. Yes, that’s a real thing! If you’re in the conscious business space and actively interacting with content that may be perceived as “controversial,” your account may become shadowbanned on certain platforms. It can be incredibly frustrating, but it shouldn’t stop you from sharing! When I find myself in this space, I trust that whoever is meant to see my content will see it - regardless of if I’m shadowbanned or not. Keep doing the work, keep lifting up others’ voices, keep speaking up for what’s right. That’s always, always more important than the numbers. Always.
What should you track and be aware of?
When it comes to tracking your analytics, it really does depend on the platform you’re looking at as well as what your goals are within that platform.
For example, I track for Instagram over Facebook because I do a majority of my sharing between these two on IG. I do cross-share – which I highly recommend if you’re not doing already! – but for the most part, I don’t put much focus on FB and therefore, don’t track anything on that platform.
That being said, for Instagram, here is what I *do* track:
For Instagram, these are the specific areas that I like to focus in on, but again, I don’t put too much stock in the numbers or base all of my content around them completely. I look for patterns, areas of growth, what works vs. what may not work so great, etc.
Then I move onto the next platform. Overall, I track analytics for: Instagram, Flodesk, Pinterest, YouTube, Libsyn, and Squarespace.
Monday’s are my designated tracking days, so that’s when I sit down, open up all my spreadsheets and collect! I honestly love it, ya’ll. I know, I know…I’m super weird 🙃 BUT I love to see the growth and ways that I can make shifts in a tangible way. If I didn’t track the data, I wouldn’t be able to see these areas of growth or be able to understand why something wasn’t working how I’d hoped it would.
How to not get stuck on the numbers — shifting from unhealthy masculine energy into a healthy blend with feminine energy when it comes to analytics tracking
As I mentioned earlier, it can become really easy to get stuck on the numbers when you’re tracking, losing focus of why you’re sharing your content in the first place. It can be easy too to compare with others who seem to be doing great and getting that growth and engagement you’re wanting.
If this is you – there’s nothing wrong with you and you’re not alone! There are ways to simply shift the energies here which will allow you to find more flow and alignment in the process!
If you find yourself getting too focused in on the numbers, I’d first suggest that you take a step back from that social media or sharing platform. During this step back, reconnect with your business WHY – why are you inspired by the work you do + why do you want to help others? Oftentimes, we can lose sight of this when we’re so focused on the numbers and little details. Tapping back into why allows you to reignite your passion for the work that you do and the people you’re connected with.
From there, when you replug back into your social media or sharing platform, allow yourself to share from a space of inspired action. Yes, have a content plan if that works for you, BUT take time to reflect and connect into how you’re feeling about the content. If you’re making reels because you feel like you “have to,” but you just HATE making reels, thennnnn it’s not for you and that energy feeds into your content, naturally repelling those who come across it.
Have fun with the content you make! It doesn’t have to look like everyone else’s, be super-duper branded, or be the latest trend. Trends are great for getting lots of views, but it’s often not the views that will stick around long term. We’re looking for quality over quantity when it comes to business sharing!!
